Releasing his debut EP Paracosm via Monstercat, music producer Mazare celebrated the release with a live stream performance in Italian landmark Grotta Gigante recently. The Italian music producer has made a good impression in the past few years, being picked up by the likes of reputable record labels like Spinnin’ Records, Seeking Blue, Ophelia, and Gud Vibrations for various hits. Now, Mazare has embarked on his first big EP project and it is a fusion of D&B, rock and everything in between. Listening to this EP one may feel pumped to do some extreme sport for sure.
We chatted with genre-fusing producer Mazare below.
Looking back, what were some of your earliest entries into music appreciation? And music production?
I think my passion for music started when I was really young. I used to listen to a lot of my father’s vinyl collection; stuff like Pink Floyd, Eagles, Springsteen. Then I started building my own musical culture, I used to listen to a lot of pop-punk and I still love it! And then David Guetta released his song ‘When Love Takes Over’ with Kelly Rowland and that’s when I opened my eyes and realized I wanted to make music for a living! 🙂
Give us a sense of the music scene where you are based.
In Italy the strongest trends right now are techno and house, bass music is nearly non-existent. Fortunately, things are starting to change thanks to a few promoters and amazing artists pushing the genre forward. There’s some hope!
What key pieces of software/gear are you using to define your sound?
I mainly produce on my Mac using a random MIDI keyboard, but I have an old piano and a guitar I play around with every time I run out of ideas. I am also taking guitar lessons to learn to play it properly and maybe one day work on some live performances.
What are some of your key musical influences?
Definitely all the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s rock music. On a more modern side, I listen to a lot of newcomers in the pop-punk and alt-rock scene, plus everything bass/melodic bass and some house too :).
What kind of relationship do you have with the internet? How does this inform your artistic expression?
A really close one, as most of us nowadays. The world is moving faster and faster; and if you want your music to be heard you need to be on the frontline, be present and open with fans and other artists, and the easiest way (especially during the pandemic) is the internet.
What would you like to achieve with your music? What does success look like to you?
Success to me would be being able to make a living out of music. Anything more than that would be a gift!
What has been a memorable highlight of your career so far?
The best memories I have are definitely my first ever show at ADE, in Amsterdam, at the Monstercat Showcase. I played alongside some DNB powerhouses like ShockOne and Protostar, it was like living in a dream. That was probably the best night of my entire life! 🙂
If you could work with, or perform alongside any artist of your choice, who would it be?
Right now I’d go with The Bloody Beetroots. He’s one of the OGs in the electronic/rock panorama and one of my biggest inspirations!
If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
Definitely a designer/visual artist or an animator! I find that world really fascinating 🙂
What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
I just released my first EP Paracosm on Monstercat and I have a lot of new music coming in the second half of the year… On some of my favourite labels ;). Keep an eye open!
