Set to release his debut album in the weeks to come via Seeking Blue Records, music producer Vanic has been delivering top-notch dubstep & bass house combined tracks like ‘PTLD’. The Vancouver based producer teamed up with rising Toronto musician LØLØ for the single. ‘PTLD’ dwells on heartbreak and losing touch with reality, definitely a relatable topic for many. Through the years the young producer has shared a few noteworthy hits like 2017’s ‘Too Soon’, which saw him feature on the U.S. Dance Chart Top 20 – recognition across the border says a lot about Vanic’s affinity for bass and dubstep.
As we await the unveiling of the album we had a brief chat with the prolific artist that has been heating up dancefloors since 2012.
Please describe your sound for us.
All genres, specifically known for melodic trap and dubstep with soaring/pitch-bending leads.
How did it all start for you?
I’ve played the piano my whole life and in middle school, I found an iPod and would listen to it constantly. I imagined what I would do to songs that I heard if I could make music… And eventually, someone gave me a Reason CD, so I experimented with making my own beats in Reason.
Which three artists would you say made you want to create your own music?
Wolfgang Gartner, Skrillex, and some heavy metal bands like Black Dahlia Murder.
What is your go-to gear/equipment when creating?
I’m pretty simple and in the box. Everything I need is on the computer. Although while mixing or putting on final touches good headphones and speakers are a must. Otherwise, I’m just within Ableton using Serum!
What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.
Sonically, the artists I mentioned above have had the most impact on my art. Skrillex has defined electronic music and broken boundaries for a lot of people I think. Now I pull inspiration from lots of places. I’ve been really into meditation and manifesting positive energy lately and I think that has had an impact on my music as well. I want more focus on the meaning behind the music and what you experience instead of just a more technical side.
What is one sub-genre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?
I honestly don’t ever like to categorize things by genres too much. There are so many genres, sub-genres and genre elitists. And gets a little much for me haha. I just like the music that I like!!! But if I had to… I’d probably say I wish that hard house would make a comeback. I miss Lisa Lashes!
Any new or upcoming artists on your radar?
PONI! She is absolutely crushing it right now with a bunch of heavy styles; DNB, 140 bpm house… She’s definitely one to be on the lookout for! (@poninoises on Instagram).
What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a performer? As an attendee?
When I saw Wolfgang Gartner at Sasquatch Music Festival in the Gorge, I was blown away. It was like I entered a whole new world. I never knew music creation could be so much fun, I never knew I could be so into it. It changed my perspective and inspired me to take music more seriously. Before that show music was more of a personal thing, something that I loved but kept to myself. After that, I realized it could be a powerful experience for lots of people at a time. One where people could bond, feel connected and create memories. It was really moving.
What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
My whole debut album is about to drop!! I’ve been really feeling like creating whatever music I want these days and the album definitely captures that. It goes from soaring melodic trap to bass house, to drum and bass, to slow and feels music. It’s just all the stuff that I enjoy.
Famous last words?
Bald is beautiful.
